Angelique van Tonder

Learning Support and Special Needs Coordinator

Angelique is a passionate and dedicated Learning Support and Special Education Needs Specialist. She obtained a Bachelors in Education Degree and a Honors Degree in Learning Support through the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Her caring and compassionate nature also led her towards completing a Master’s Degree in Applied Psychology through Middlesex University where her research focused on Autism and the experiences of mother's with children with Autism. Her dissertation research topic was selected and was presented at the 5th International Conference on Emerging Paradigms in Business and Social science (ERPBSS) in January 2020. 

Angelique considers herself a lifelong learner and has also obtained TLP Accreditation, a Diploma in Special Education Needs, completed courses in Sensory Processing Disorder and Speech and Language Support, and will also be a UK Level 7 CCET accredited practitioner. Angelique has been working as a learning support and special education needs specialist in the UAE since 2015 and moved from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 2019. Prior to that she was employed at the University of Stellenbosch as a lecturer's assistant and part time tutor where she taught university students the fundamentals of early childhood development as well as effective teaching methodologies and inclusive practices. Angelique specializes in reading, writing, spelling, numeracy intervention, and social and emotional development support. She enjoys supporting children of all ages and believes that multisensory strategies and play based learning are essential  for students of all ages. 

 

Angelique has experience working with a wide range of students and believes that each child has a unique gift to share with the world around them. She has supported children with learning difficulties and barriers to learning including hearing and visual difficulties, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia, Attention Deficit Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Delay and Speech and Language Disorders to name but a few.

 

Angelique believes in the importance of holistic and collaborative support where parents, teachers and medical professionals and therapists work together to support the student in reaching their full potential. During her time in the UAE, she has developed a strong collaborative relationship with many experts in related fields such as psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, ABA therapists, pediatricians and audiologists who have greatly contributed to her knowledge and experience. Angelique also enjoys supporting parents through parent workshops and parent group discussions.
